Roseville Police welcome new homeless outreach worker

Updated June 23, 2020
The Roseville Police Department is pleased to announce the addition of a homeless outreach worker to the department. Kasey Lix (pictured in the middle-center) just moved here from Portland, Oregon. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in counseling and has years of experience working in the fields of behavioral health and substance abuse. As a member of Roseville Police Department’s Social Services Unit, Kasey will work with the team and local service providers on homeless issues, with an emphasis on the downtown area. She’ll also respond to calls at the request of officers to connect people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness with appropriate services and resources.

This new outreach position is funded through a partnership with Placer County Health and Human Services, the City of Roseville and Downtown Roseville Partnership. Ms. Lix is an employee of Placer County. Her assignment to the Roseville Police Department is yet another example of the City, the County and other stakeholders working together to integrate services and improve the quality of life in our community.

The Roseville Police Department has long recognized that public safety is a community-wide effort. Police officers have unique responsibilities, but some situations require a multidisciplinary approach in partnership with other stakeholders, including social services, other city departments, schools, businesses and residents. Other Roseville Police/Placer County partnerships include the Family Mobile Team, a group of Placer County social workers, therapists and family/child advocates headquartered at the Roseville Police Department. They respond to police calls for service where families might need more support and follow-up than police officers can provide. After police officers stabilize situations and leave, Family Mobile Team members stay behind and work with families to create a plan to improve the circumstances.

RPD also works closely with Placer County Probation. One county probation officer is assigned to RPD’s Social Services Unit, working with the unit on camp-clean ups and other homeless issues, and monitoring local homeless people who are on probation. Another team of Placer County Probation officers is headquartered at the Roseville Police Department. Their job is to supervise local probationers, making sure they comply with the terms of their probation and supporting their successful re-entry into the community. Having Probation co-located at the Roseville Police Department means police officers can more easily work with them on issues involving probationers, keeping our community safer.

Kasey will spend the next few weeks getting to know the local community and the service providers who work on homeless issues. If you see her around, be sure to give her a warm Roseville welcome.
