On 07/19/2019, a Roseville Police Officer made contact with a group of individuals at the Galleria Mall who he believed were on searchable probation and had connections with a criminal street gang. While talking with the group, one of the individuals asked to leave, stating he was not on probation. The Officer granted the request and the individual walked away.
The Officer searched the person(s) on probation and located burglary related tools, which is a crime. The Officer continued to talk with the group and ultimately decided to search their vehicle. This prompted the Officer and other units on scene to consider questioning the individual who previously walked away from the group.
While searching the mall parking garage, they located the person of interest. The subject briefly stopped to talk to officers, then suddenly ran from officers. While fleeing, the suspect intentionally discarded a loaded handgun in the mall. The pursuing officer picked up the loaded handgun and secured the weapon. The Officer continued to pursue the fleeing individual, eventually catching him and taking him into custody.
The suspect, later identified as Zion Gary out of Stockton was arrested and booked into the South Placer Jail on multiple charges. It was also later determined that he was on searchable probation out of San Joaquin County for robbery.
While in custody, the Roseville Police Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) continued to investigate Gary who had connections to a criminal street gang. Roseville CSU Detectives determined Gary was also involved in other criminal activity.
Through a collaboration with the Placer County District Attorney’s Office, several criminal charges were filed against Gary. On January 9th, 2020 Zion Gary pled to multiple felony counts and will serve nine years and four months in a State Correctional facility for his crimes. He pled to pandering (vague), participating in a criminal street gang, and a gun allegation.
This case came to fruition through a joint effort of Roseville Police Patrol, Roseville Crime Suppression Detectives and the Placer County District Attorney’s Office.
