Roseville Transit will honor a civil rights icon on Monday, Feb. 5 by taking part in Rosa Parks Day and reserving a front bus seat in her honor and proclaiming the day on transit reader boards as buses drive around town.
Rosa Parks became a key figure in the Civil Rights movement when she refused to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery, Alabama public transit bus .
Her peaceful actions of civil disobedience against racial injustices sparked the beginning of the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott, and a national civil rights movement. In 1996, Parks received the highest U.S. civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The bus in which Rosa Parks was sitting has been restored and is currently displayed in the Henry Ford Museum.
