Call if you can. Text if you can't.
Text to 911 is a now available to all mobile users (including visitors from out of the area) in Placer County.
It allows someone to use their activated cell phone to contact the appropriate 911 center via text message instead of calling 911. You should only use text to 911 if
- you are in a situation where it is not safe to place a voice call to 911
- you are experiencing a medical emergency where you are unable to speak, or
- if you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability.
Remember, "Call if you can. Text if you can't." Calling 911 is still a faster and more efficient way of relaying an emergency to the Public Safety Dispatchers. Your text to 911 can only be sent to 911 and cannot be sent to multiple people. At this time, text to 911 does not support picture or video messaging. Your phone must also be text-enabled and must have a text plan to work.
