Fall brings on a flurry of plant sales (for example, UC Davis Arboretum, California Native Plant Society), so get your plant list ready. Fall also is the best time to install most garden plants. Why? Because your garden deserves a cozy start before the hot summer arrives! Other reasons:
- Rainfall provides consistent soil moisture, saves drinking water
- Soil is still warm for root growth
- Limited growth above ground so plant's energy goes to roots
- Less transplant stress with cooler temps (good for gardeners too)
- Easier to dig holes
- Fewer active pests and diseases
- Mulch retains soil moisture, reduces weeds, moderates soil temperature
- You can get a jump on establishment, ready to weather hot summer months
- They perform beautifully come spring
“Think of fall planting as giving your garden a head start. Plants focus on strong root systems now, so by spring they’re ready to take off and thrive,” says Cheryl Buckwalter, landscape educator.
Ready to create your list? Look for low water-use California native and climate-appropriate plants, match sun exposure to your garden. When planting, group plants together with the same water and sun needs for optimum water efficiency.
