For four years, Roseville's Utility Field Day has been giving local high school students a first-hand look at the exciting world of utilities. Held twice a year, this popular event has connected about 300 students from Roseville, Oakmont, Westpark, Antelope, and Woodcreek High Schools with utility professionals who love what they do.
Learning by doing
The most recent Field Day, held on October 23, brought together 38 Woodcreek High School students from the Construction and Engineering class. They spent the day rotating through three utility departments: electric, wastewater, and water. With guidance from our crews, students tried tools, operated equipment, and saw up close how these essential services keep our community running. Also included in one of the stations was engineering, showing students what it’s like to design and plan the systems behind the scenes.
Inspiration in the field
“It’s always a pleasure to peel back the curtain on the amazing career opportunities in Roseville Utilities,” said Melissa Kinsey, Interpretive Services Specialist II at the Utility Exploration Center. “Students got hands-on experience, felt what it’s like to work in utilities, and left with smiles and a few 'ah ha' moments.”
That kind of spark is exactly what organizers hope for. Anna Gonzalez-Cifuentes, Work-based Learning Coordinator for the Roseville Joint Unified High School District, shared, “Students who had no idea what direction to go have become intrigued. That is a win!”
Building the future
Eight events in, the excitement hasn’t slowed down. Field Day continues to open eyes and create real connections between students and the rewarding careers that help keep Roseville running strong. It’s a day of discovery, teamwork, and maybe even the start of a future career.
