Want a safer, more secure home? Do your own home security audit.
Summer is just around the corner, and it’s the time that many people head out on vacation. Before you drive off for a week of relaxation, make sure your home is secure. You can do your own home-security audit.
First,
download our security checklist. Then, using the checklist walk through your home and find ways to make it more secure.
Remember that the success of all security measures depends on using them consistently and always taking care of the basics--locking doors and windows before you leave, and keeping your garage door closed and locked.
Roseville resident Chris recently did a home security upgrade with Roseville Police Department staff.
Watch this video and learn what simple security upgrades were made to his home.
Here are the security improvements mentioned in the video that you, too, can make on your home:
- Home surveillance cameras – If you don’t already have one, consider installing a home security camera system. There are many good systems available on the market. Choose a system that you can watch remotely, provides high-quality images, and most importantly, is simple and easy for you to operate. When installing your system make sure to position cameras so they get images of visitors' faces, and not just the tops of their head.
- Fake TV –This gadget can be put on a timer, and it creates the impression from the outside of the home that someone is home watching TV. There are a few brands available. You can search for "fake TV burglar deterrent" on the web.
- Window locks – These are inexpensive, easy to install, and available from any home improvement store. They prevent windows from being opened beyond the point of installation.
- Security strike plate -The security strike plate lock can fortify your front door and deter "door-kick" type burglars.
- By doing your own security audit, you can expose the weaknesses in your home’s security, and then make some simple improvements to prepare your home for your summer vacation. If you want added peace of mind while on vacation, consider signing up for a vacation house check. As time and staffing permit, our Roseville Police "Citizens on Patrol" volunteers will check the exterior of your home while you're away, making sure doors and gates are secure and any unwanted papers or advertisements are removed from the front doorway. If they see a problem, they'll notify you; and, if appropriate, will have a police officer respond.
